The original concertina artists’ book was made using prints from my ‘Wild Margins’ collection, investigating the beautiful and diverse hedgerows that border our coastal pathways here in Cornwall.
I wanted to capture a feeling of wild nature that has its own rhythm in amongst the incredible diversity and seeming chaos of these amazing natural structures. Like a slow walk along the coast path sheltered from the elements, while peeking through the leaves, flowers and stems to the horizon beyond.
I used collaged paper lithography prints derived from photographs and drawings of small moments in the hedgerows to create the focal points along the length of the piece. I then used graphite in different forms to draw across the pages to bring connection and cohesion to the work as a whole.
I really wanted the giclee versions to feel as authentic and close to the original as possible, so after careful scanning and colour editing, I had the book is printed into three sections. I then added the ripped edges and joined the sections together leaving visible seams to make one long piece, mirroring the construction process of the original.
The print, once constructed is exactly the same size as the original concertina book. All the lithographic print collage and drawing marks have been reproduced faithfully to scale, even matching the folds of the original to the folds of the print!
Creases, ripped edges, ink patterns, pencil marks and erasures are all visible in fantastic detail, unfolding beautifully in the German etching paper. Like the originals, the books can be framed the paper is strong enough that the work can be displayed free standing.
The paper allows the work to stand up on its own so could be displayed open on a shelf or framed in an open concertina, allowing the story to unfold as the eye travels across each small panel.

What is a Giclee print?
Pronounced zhee’clay, the word comes from the French, meaning to spray, as they are made using high quality ink jet printers.
The quality of a giclee print is far superior to all other forms of printing and is the closest an artist can get to matching their original 2-D artwork. For art lovers who want a piece of fine art but cant afford an original, giclee reproductions are a great alternative.
The inks are pigment, not dye based, and the papers are archival standard, meaning they last a very long time! Prints can last approx. 200 years in the photo album, 80-years on display behind glass (light fastness) and 50-years without the glass (gas fastness).
